Yeralavani Community Radio Station: Bridging Communication Gaps in the Jalihal Community through Community Radio

YPS established a community radio station, Yeralavani 91.2 FM, to address communication challenges in the Jalihal community. The station, which won the National Award for ‘Best Creative Content’ in 2013, has been instrumental in connecting the underprivileged community with the outside world and providing educational opportunities. It also offers training in recording, interviewing, and editing programs.

Need:

The Jalihal community was facing significant communication challenges, with a lack of effective mediums to disseminate crucial information related to agriculture, education, health, and women’s empowerment. The absence of a reliable communication channel made it difficult for community members to stay informed about essential issues and government schemes.

Goal:

The primary goal was to establish a community radio station to bridge this communication gap and provide a platform to guide and inform the community about various everyday issues and government schemes. This initiative aimed to enhance awareness and improve the quality of life in the Jalihal region.

Implementation:

To achieve this goal, YPS set up well-equipped studios in Sangli and Jalihal. Programs were recorded at the Sangli studio and then transmitted through the Jalihal studio. Active participation from the local community was encouraged to ensure the radio content was relevant and engaging. The radio station was named Yeralavani 91.2 FM.

The station’s programming covered a wide range of topics, including agriculture, education, health, and women’s empowerment. It provided practical advice, highlighted government schemes, and shared success stories from the community.

Results:

The radio station quickly became a vital resource for the Jalihal community. It won the National Award for ‘Best Creative Content’ in 2013, recognizing its impact and innovation. Some of the key achievements of Yeralavani 91.2 FM include:

  • Bridging the Communication Gap: The station has successfully connected the underprivileged community with the outside world, providing access to vital information and resources.
  • Educational Opportunities: The station serves as a platform for youth and students to learn about better educational opportunities in cities, helping them to aspire for higher education and professional growth.
  • Innovative Strategies: Yeralavani 91.2 FM uses creative strategies to guide Backyard Poultry participants, offering practical advice and support to enhance their productivity and income.
  • Skill Development: The radio station trains the younger generation in essential skills such as recording, interviewing, and editing programs, preparing them for future career opportunities in media and communication.

Conclusion

Yeralavani 91.2 FM has transformed the communication landscape in the Jalihal community. By providing a platform for information dissemination and community participation, the radio station has empowered the local population and fostered a sense of connection and awareness. The success of this initiative demonstrates the power of community radio in bridging communication gaps and driving positive social change.

Note From Designer

This is my best attempt to show you all what YPS have been working on and what we are excited about upcoming future. However, its impossible for me to make you feel what I feel in Jalihal, a classic Indian country side.

Its partly because of lack of man power and partly my lack of ability to design the website. So, here is an open invite to anyone reading this, Come Visit Jalihal! its beautiful, sunny, spacious and the people are super generous!
